JFDP Alumna Andriela Vitic introduces students and colleagues at the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management to
Service Learning

Having seen firsthand the lack of knowledge about service learning in Montenegro, JFDP alumna Andriela Vitic decided to organize a workshop on the subject for her colleagues at the University of Montenegro, Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management. The workshop, conducted on April 27, 2006, offered different participants a clear ideaof how they could use Service Learning to take an active role in helping their community. It has also demonstrated the new role of the University in promoting learning through the active participation in service experiences. The participants of the workshop, particularly students, got a chance to discuss and write about the possible role service experiences might play in their academic future.

In the workshop, participants received some knowledge about Service Learning, as well as seeing specific examples of US syllabi that incorporated it as a methodology. Then, students and educators brainstormed what kind of activities made sense for their own classes and subjects. Based upon the information provided by participants, Dr. Vitic will prepare a manula for her collaeagues on the propoer application of Service Learning within their curriculum.

As an additional treat, Professor Greg Ringer from the University of Oregon was able to attend the workshop, and share his experiences of Service Learnin in the U.S.

The result of the workshop will hopefully be high-quality Service Learning projects, that influence not only workshop participants, but also the community at large.
