What is American University in Bulgaria (AUBG)?

American University in Bulgaria is a higher educational institution founded in 1991 through the joint efforts of USAID, the Open Society Institute (OSI) and the Bulgarian government.

AUBG is an institution with more than 1,100 students from around the world, from Tajikistan to Brazil, with teaching staff composed of professors and experts from the United States and other countries.  For the 2012/13 school year, registration of candidates for AUBG of Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro is implemented by American Councils for International Education offices in Skopje, Priština, Belgrade and Podgorica.
 
What can I study at AUBG?

English is the language of instruction at AUBG. AUBG students can choose one or two overall programs of study (majors), which may be accompanied by an additional program (minors). Majors offered for 2012/13 are: Business Administration, Computer Science and Informatics, European Studies, Economics, History and Civilization, Information Systems, Journalism and Media, Political Science and International Relations.

The teaching process follows the modern methods and practices of American liberal arts universities. In addition to lectures, individual work of students and mentoring, AUBG offers opportunities for entertainment and extracurricular activities (workshops organized for students’ interests, sports and artistic activities, etc.). Students have the opportunity during study at AUBG to gain work experience in various companies around the world with whom the university cooperates, and, in many cases, students receive a job after graduation with the companies where they intern. Am I eligible to apply to AUBG?

If you have completed high school or are currently in your fourth year of high school or a vocational school allowing transition to 5A institutions in your home country, you are eligible to apply for study at AUBG. YOU NEED NOT HAVE ALREADY GRADUATED TO APPLY TO AUBG. However, conditional acceptance will be granted and submission of your high school diploma to AUBG is required prior to enrollment. 

How can I apply and when is the application deadline for AUBG?

If you wish to apply to AUBG, there are several enrollment deadlines, depending on whether you are also interested in applying for a scholarship or financial aid. A completed application form, essay, and supporting documents are required from all applicants. You must also have passed the SAT or ACT test and a TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge ESOL English test.

IF YOU WISH TO APPLY FOR FULL SCHOLARSHIPS from the Open Society Institute and receive fee waivers for both the SAT and TOEFL tests, the deadline for completion of the online application (online at www.aubg.bg), essay submission, is January 1, 2012.  The supporting documents listed should be submitted to the appropriate American Councils office in Skopje, Prishtina, Belgrade or Podgorica earlier, by February 15, 2012. 

By February 15, 2012 please send the following documents to your country's American Councils office:

• A copy of first page of your passport
• Certificates acquired by the time of application (you can send a copy that is notarized)
• Translations of these certificates into English by a Court Interpreter
Three letters of recommendation from people who have followed your academic development (a form for letters of reference is available on the AUBG site) + Financial Aid Application (that can be download from the AUBG website)


For further information about the TOEFL and the SAT tests, contact the American Councils in the capital city of your country.  The IELTS test can be taken at the British Council office in the capital city your country.
